How To Choose a Proper Supplement?
If you only want to supplement your diet with complete basics, then this article is for you. Most Americans do not get their basic micronutrient needs from food intake alone. Supplements become necessary to fill this gap.
When it comes to complementarity, there is what I refer to as the “hierarchy of requirements”. This hierarchy begins with the basic nutritional foundation and then progresses to advanced or hybrid supplementation. Think of a hierarchy that looks like a pyramid, which has a broad base.
What are the basic foundation supplements?
There are two daily supplements I like to call foundation products. These are high-quality multivitamin and fish oil capsules. Let me explain why I chose these two.
Micronutrients found in a multivitamin are essential to meet a common whole food shortage. Most people do not consume enough vegetables and fruits for optimal nutrition. At the same time, keep in mind that it is not possible to fix a bad diet with supplements.
But, simply taking any brand or type of multivitamin is not the solution. When it comes to supplements, you more often than not, “get what you pay for”. The common mistake consumers make is to buy a cheaper, larger bottle online or from a big box store. It is generally a hard heat-pressed type and the absorption rate is quite poor for the body. When buying multivitamins, look for a high-quality brand. You can also select a specific gender. A male has different nutrients than females.
A good multivitamin provides the basic nutrient needs upon which all others are manufactured. Just because you cannot see a change in energy or some health issues, does not mean that it is not helping. Remember, a strong foundation may not get all the acclaim of a luxury home, but it is the foundation of beauty. You are only strong like your foundation.
Fish oil, known as omega-3, is my other choice for building a strong healthy foundation.
Omega-3s have very good anti-inflammatory properties. In today’s world, our diet is high in omega-6, which causes inflammation. If you choose to get your recommended dose of omega-3 through diet alone, you will need to eat fatty fish at least 3-5 times per week. As you can see, this is not the easiest way to do it!
Like multivitamins, fish oil is also sold at a discount in large stores. However, these are rarely of high quality. A good fish oil supplement has a high EPA / DHA ratio. With a higher ratio, there is no need to take multiple pills.
As I said earlier, these two supplements are the foundation of any good healthy dietary supplementation. Without a good multivitamin and fish oil, you are building on unstable ground.
